History Of National Sandwich Day
Even though people have long enjoyed the combination of bread filled with cheese and meats, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, is believed to have invented and naming of the sandwich.
The earl, who enjoyed gambling, asked his cook to make him a meal in 1762 that wouldn’t interrupt his 24-hour gambling streak or require cutlery.
The cook gave the earl sliced meat between two slices of toast, leaving him with one hand free to carry on with his game. Neither the earl nor the cook was the sandwich’s actual maker.
It is said that Montagu visited Eastern Mediterranean and saw sandwiches served by the Greeks and Turks with their appetizers, and asked his cook to copy their methods. After the Revolutionary war sandwiches were a well-known English meal. They were included in an “American cookbook in 1815”.
