National Donut Day is celebrated on November 5th, 2022.
This holiday first emerged during World War I. This is when the Salvation Army sent over 250 women to the front lines of France to deliver food to the soldiers.
When the women first arrived in France, they discovered that frying donuts in army helmets were a very simple process and that the shape of the helmet allowed for the frying of up to seven donuts at once.
History of National Donut Day
National Donut Day or National Doughnut Day, is celebrated in the United States and in some other countries every year. National Donut Day is started in 1938 as a fundraiser for “The Chicago’s Salvation Army.”
Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression and to honor the Salvation Army “Ladies” of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.
This holiday began during World War I. The Salvation Army dispatched over 250+ women to France’s front lines to deliver food to the soldiers.
Twenty years later, in 1938, the Salvation Army made the decision to establish a National Donut Day in honor of the women who brought donuts to the troops as they started to look for ways to promote awareness of and financing for the causes they support. National Donut Day was correspondingly established.
It’s a little bit more difficult to discover about the second National Doughnut Day, which falls on November 5th. That is because no one is really sure where this holiday originally came from.
Mentions of it go back to copies of Ladies Home Journal printed during the 1930s.
