This day is celebrated to honor the military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday started to realize the patriotism of the army people who died for the country’s service and was originally called as Armistice Day.

In 1954, the holiday was named “Veterans Day” to honor all the army people who lost their lives in wars.

History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day, also known as Armistice Day, was originally purposed as a U.S. holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on Nov 11, 1918. In 1938, Nov. 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.'” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.
During World War II and Korean War in 1954 U.S urged veteran services and amended the act of 1938 to insert the word “Veterans”.
After the legislation approval, Nov.11 officially became the day to honor American veterans on the day.
Veterans day is celebrated on the fourth Monday of November. But many states refused to celebrate the day on this date. The day was celebrated on Oct 25, 1971.
Finally, on Sep 20, 1975 president Gerald R. Ford passed a law that stated the day will be celebrated on Nov.11. Since then the day is celebrated on Nov.11.
Significance of Veterans Day
Veterans Day is celebrated to celebrate the patriotism of the army officers who lost their lives for the country’s service. There are 19.5 million approx veterans in the United States.
On this day schools, local and many business firms celebrate these ceremonies. All United States post offices are also closed on this day. And no postal deliveries are done on this day.
Special meals and lunch is prepared by people and communities to celebrate the day. Some restaurants offer free meals and discounts on this day.
In Canada, Britain, Australia, and France the day is celebrated on Nov 11 to honor the army people who lost their lives in World War I and World War II.
